'This whole journey's gonna be worth it' - David Liti eyes Olympic gold after Commonwealth glory

January 22, 2019

Liti became a national hero on the Gold Coast, but wants more from Tokyo 2020.

Kiwi Commonwealth Games gold medallist David Liti is looking to build on his Gold Coast success, eyeing more glory in the weightlifting at next year's Tokyo Olympics.

Liti, 22, lifted an astonishing 403kg - a new Commonwealth Games record - on the Gold Coast last year, taking the gold medal and becoming a new Kiwi sporting hero in the process.

Speaking to 1 NEWS today, Liti says he's hopeful of replicating his success again - only this time on the Olympic stage. He's currently in training for weightlifting's pinnacle event.

"It's going well," Liti began.

"All that hard work, something good's going to come off from this. I'm excited for the next 18 months, I can't wait until the time comes for the Olympics.

"I know this whole journey's going to be worth it."

Liti also says that despite taking home a Commonwealth Games gold medal, another at next year's Tokyo games would be even better.

"An Olympic medal - that is the dream.

"It would be like a life goal is just done. I can't explain it. It's a long shot, but anything's possible."
