'We want something really big' - Former Olympic champion Eric Murray starts NZ Indoor Rowing Championships

November 11, 2018

Two-time gold medallist Murray has traded the water for the machine in his latest venture.

Double Olympic champion Eric Murray may have stepped away from competitive rowing, but certainly isn't planning on slowing down, kickstarting New Zealand's indoor rowing championships.

Murray, 36, has mobilised the Indoor Rowing Association, hoping to see all ages represented on the erg.

"Since retiring, I'll say I've let myself go a little bit - but I still use the rowing machine a lot for fitness," he began.

"We want something really big. Something that encompasses something from under 14 to Masters-I, which is 95 plus."

Murray won't be going it alone though, joined by para-rower Nu Filo, fresh from his stint at the Invictus Games, with para-athletes also welcome at the competition.

The double gold medallist is hoping to attract a new generation to the sport, giving a taste to those who might not have otherwise experienced so.

"If this can give someone a taste, and then turn around and say 'Wow, I might actually do this on the water', then potentially we could uncover the people that want to race in Paris and LA, 2024-2028."

The New Zealand Indoor Rowing Championships take place at the end of November.
