'We know how much hard work they put in' -meet the Auckland foursome heading to Youth Olympics

September 3, 2018

Four Westlake Boys' High students will head to next month's games in Argentina.

Westlake Boys' High School's incredible record of producing top sporting talent isn't showing signs of slowing down any time soon, with four students off to next month's Youth Olympics in Argentina.

Having produced the likes of rower Mike Stanley, sailor Dean Barker and Kiwi basketball great Kirk Penney just to name a few, 17-year old discus thrower Connor Bell could be the next Westlake prodigy to shine on the world stage.

After winning gold at the Youth Commonwealth Games last year, Bell has been mentored by Dame Valerie Adams, as the Olympic champion took time out following the birth of daughter, Kimoana.

"It was a real once in a lifetime sort of experience," he told 1 NEWS.

Bell is just one of the quartet selected for the games, a New Zealand record for one school, and with all four competing in different sports, likely a world first too.

Now working as Westlake director of sport, former Zimbabwe cricketer and ex-Auckland coach Paul Strang spoke of the quartet's achievement.

"If that's the case, we're very proud of that," he said.

"We're very proud of the boys actually, because we know how much hard work they put in.

"I do hope they find that balance between performing to their best, and just taking time to smell the roses and enjoy the experiences and the sights and being part of a team."

But while they might be looking forward to competing in Argentina, something else has caught they boys' eyes ahead of their South American adventure.

"I've heard Argentinians do a good steak, so I'll be feeding up in the buffet a lot of the time," Bell said.
