Watch: Joseph Parker's promoter discusses Kiwi heavyweight's next options

May 8, 2018

Parker is looking to return to the ring after his loss to Anthony Joshua.

Kiwi heavyweight Joseph Parker has a healthy choice of contenders to face when he next returns to the ring, promoter David Higgins says.

Parker, 26, tasted the first defeat of his professional career, losing to Britian's Anthony Joshua by unanimous decision in Cardiff last month to surrender his WBO heavyweight title.

Speaking to 1 NEWS today however, Duco Events boss David Higgins says that the Kiwi has no shortage of options for when he returns to the ring.

"There's some offshore options, maybe one or two in the UK, we could talk to our co-promoter Bob Arum in the United States, we could look at New Zealand," Higgins said.

"One of the options we'll look at is getting a credible top 10, top 15 opponent down to New Zealand.

"With Joe back in the top five, if we do that and get a win, he might be back in the top two or three by the end of the year."

He also added that Parker's record and his support from his local fans as well as those abroad sets him apart from other heavyweight contenders.

"One advantage Joseph has is the New Zealand fan base, he's done the hard work to build a home fan base."

"A lot of those American boxers and so on don't have a following. Even Deontay Wilder struggles to fill an arena in his hometown Alabama.

"A lot of those international boxers are now a bit afraid of Joseph, he looked so good (against Joshua) they're now afraid of Joseph.

"All those people that were yapping away calling out Joseph - like Tony Bellew - there's now radio silence, they don't want to fight Joseph anymore, and that's understandable.
