'It wasn't meant to be' - Black Sox legend Nathan Nukunuku opens up about turning down rugby

March 26, 2019

Nukunuku, 38, has been selected for a seventh time for the Black Sox world championships squad.

Black Sox legend Nathan Nukunuku admits in all that he has achieved in softball, he would have liked to have done that with the All Blacks instead.

Nukunuku, 38, has been named for a record seventh time in the Black Sox World Championship team for the World Series in Prague in June.

"Look what I have done in my career, I would have loved to have done all that with the All Blacks but it wasn’t meant to be," said Nukunuku.

Early on in his illustrious softball carer, Nukunuku was offered to trial in the NPC for Hawke's Bay, but turned it down after signing a contract with the Black Sox.

"My family is ingrained in softball, although rugby was my passion growing up. Softball is definitely the second-best thing I wanted to do.

"Once I excelled in softball at a later age, especially winning the world series in 2000, the decision was made."

The Black Sox are defending world champions. Should they win the World Series, Nukunuku will become New Zealand's most decorated softball player.

"I'm just happy I have been able to lead the team to a couple of titles and at least keep ourselves up there," he said.
