The cyclors that revolutionised Team New Zealand's charge to this year's America's Cup in Bermuda will play no part in the 2021 defence, CEO Grant Dalton has said today.
The move towards pedal power from traditional grinding caused a drastic shift in the sailing in Bermuda earlier this year, with Team New Zealand romping to an emphatic 8-1 victory over Oracle Team USA to reclaim the Auld Mug.
However, the shift from catamarans back to monohulls will mean a redundancy for cyclors, with Team New Zealand implementing a whole new on-board system.
"The weight limit to the total overall crew last time was a bit low, and that's why the guys were small bionic babies," Dalton told 1 NEWS.
"This time, we'll lift the weight limit so that it allows bigger guys that - just by inference - bring more power to the boat.
"There'll still be an element of stored energy within the boat, the foils are quite big, and we'll need some mechanism of moving them that probably won't be human."
