Kiwi bowls legend Val Smith takes home fifth national title

January 8, 2019

Val Smith and partner Lisa Prideau lived up to their favourites tag to take the crown.

Val Smith and Lisa Prideaux have taken out the women's pairs at the New Zealand bowls championships, winning a thrilling final by the skin of their teeth in Auckland this afternoon.

Facing off against Linda Ralph and Reen Stratford, the pair surged to an 8-0 lead, before their opponents clawed their way back into the final.

Having then trailed 12-6, Ralph and Stratford rallied to a 17-14 lead, with the title all but theirs.

However, it was then Smith and Prideaux's turn for a comeback, posting two braces to bring scores level while Ralph at Stratford added a single, levelling the scores with one end remaining.

Smith and Prideaux would close out the win in style, with Smith gaining her fifth national title, having won three in pairs and two fours.
