USA and Canada to clash in three ice hockey internationals in NZ next year

December 19, 2017

The USA and Canada will battle it out in three ice hockey internationals in Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown next year.

The Ice Hockey Classic was in Australia the last three years, but international ice hockey has not been seen in New Zealand since 2011, when the USA and Canada had a three-match series.

The match at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on June 23 will be the first time in the southern hemisphere that an outdoor ice hockey game has been held at a major stadium.

Promoters TEG Live say the players will be a mix of veterans and emerging talent showcasing their sport.

Retired NHL legend and 2017 Ice Hockey Classic Canada captain, Mike Commodore, says he enjoyed the Australian series this year.

"It was great to see so many passionate ice hockey fans come out and support us in Australia," he said.

The other matches are at Spark Arena in Auckland on June 22 and Queenstown Ice Arena on June 28.

Tickets are already on sale from ticketek.co.nz.
