'Take my mind away from throwing big balls' - Tom Walsh links up with NZ golf legend Sir Bob Charles

October 3, 2018

The Kiwi shot put champion put his golf skills to the test at the Harewood Pro-Am tournament in Christchurch.

New Zealand shot put champion Tom Walsh is enjoying his time off from the track and field world circuit, linking up with Kiwi golfing great Sir Bob Charles at the Harewood Pro-Am tournament in Christchurch today.

Walsh, 26, said being on the golf course is a good distraction from his usual profession.

"Just trying to get out and take my mind away from throwing big balls and trying to hit small ones further," said Walsh.

The Kiwi thrower has had an outstanding 2018 season, winning the World Indoor champs, claiming gold at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and cementing first place in the Diamond League series.

Walsh's big target is winning a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and securing a world record throw.

"The only thing I haven't got is that gold at Olympics, so that's in a year and a half pretty much, so world record and Olympic gold mate."
