Sophie Pascoe continues perfect start at World Champs with second gold medal

September 11, 2019

Sophie Pascoe has collected her second gold medal in two days after another dominant performance in the pool at this year's World Para Swimming Championships in London.

Pascoe, who won gold yesterday in the women's 100m freestyle S9, finished almost three seconds faster than her nearest rival today while competing in the 100m backstroke S9 final.

Her time of 1:07:49 was just 0.08s shy of the world record she set earlier this year but the time was good enough to break the World Championships record.

Australia's Ellie Cole finished second 2.93s behind Pascoe while the USA's Elizabeth Smith took bronze 5.15s after Pascoe had finished.

This morning's win is Pascoe's 10th world title but she could add to that two more times this week when she races in the 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle.

New Zealand also claimed a silver medal this morning thanks to Auckland teenager Tupou Neiufi who finished second in the women's 100m backstroke.
