'I put in all this hard work' - meet the Kiwi weightlifter destined for stardom

August 16, 2018

Kanah Andrews-Nahu has achieved more at 17 than most do in a career.

She may only be 17 years of age, but West Auckland teen Kanah Andrews has already achieved more than most do in a lifetime.

Having cleaned up at this year's youth, junior and senior under 75kg division at the Oceania Champs in June, the Avondale College student is heading to the Youth Olympics in Argentina.

"It's really hard for me to explain, it was kind of a sense of relief in a way," she told 1 NEWS.

"I put in all this hard work all this time at the gym to get to where i wanted to be, and it was kinda like 'go you!'

"But at the same time like 'wow take it all in.'"

Helping Andrews is none other than 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Richie Patterson, blown away by the youngsters seemingly endless potential.

"I'm pretty lucky to have her as an athlete," he said.

"In terms of what shes lifting, its exceeding all before her. I'm not quite sure what she's capable of - it's new ground."

So while she may be a favourite for Buenos Aires later this year, the rising star is keeping her feet firmly on the ground, looking forward to the finer things ahead of her upcoming trip.

"I really wanna check out the food court. I'm looking forward to food."
