New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has said US President Donald Trump put black and minority athletes into a corner and forced them to take action with his comments about the 'Take a Knee' protest.
Brees addressed the controversy when questioned by reporters at a training session in Sunbury-on-Thames, England today.
His team mate Cam Jordan added "it's because we love our country we have the ability to take this knee".
In the latest comments by Trump on the protest that sees players kneel while the Star-Spangled Banner is played at the beginning of a match, the president said yesterday that football players could protest during a game, "but they cannot do it during the national anthem".
Trump said that when players kneel during the anthem "they're not respecting our country".
NFL players have been kneeling to protest what they see as racial injustice in the United States.
Trump has been criticising protesting players since a rally last week in Alabama.
The New Orleans Saints were training in Surrey ahead of their game against the Miami Dolphins at Wembley.
