Para-shot putter Lisa Adams destroys world record with huge throw in Auckland

Kiwi para athlete Lisa Adams has beaten the women's para shot put world record by over 50cm as she continues her charge towards next year's Tokyo Paralympics.

On her fifth attempt at the Sir Graeme Douglas Athletics championships in West Auckland last night, Adams threw 14.52m in the F37 event.

The effort smashed her personal best of 14.13m from the NZ Track and Field Championships earlier this month but unlike that throw, this one was performed at a World Para Athletics-sanctioned event.

It means her throw last night is a new world record, destroying the old one set by Germany's Franziska Liebhardt in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Liebhardt previously held the record with a throw of 13.96m.

Adams showed it wasn't a fluke either, throwing just five centimetres short of the new benchmark with her next throw.

1 NEWS revealed last month Adams was aiming for the Tokyo Paralympics with the help of coach, sister and Olympic champion Dame Valerie Adams. At the time, she was 45 centimetres short of Liebhardt's old record.

But Dame Val told 1 NEWS at the time she has what it takes to go far in the sport.

"I knew she had the mongrel, I have the mongrel," said Dame Valerie.

"It's just built within our family, but she had the mongrel to throw this implement and I knew that from the word go.

"I like the fact that she trains like me. There's no soft cocks around here - she's straight up stubborn. If I give her something to do and challenge her, she takes it on without actually wimping out."
