NZ cyclist Eddie Dawkins has memorable cameo in team pursuit for Southland

February 13, 2019

The 29-year-old rode the four kilometre team pursuit at the weekend’s nationals and went on to win gold.

New Zealand sprint cyclist Eddie Dawkins has been preparing for the Track Cycling World Championships in Poland later this month a little different, mixing it up with endurance riders.

The 29-year-old is built for explosive power and three laps is all that is required in the team sprint.

But as he and his teammates chase a fourth world title later this month, Dawkins decided to ride the four kilometre team pursuit at the nationals for Southland over the weekend.

He helped Southland win gold in under four minutes for a championship record.

"We chucked him in second wheel and said go to your blow and he did a four and a half lap turn and dropped us off," said New Zealand endurance rider Nicj Kergozou.

"It was almost like behind the motorbike Edide he's quite a big guy so I was tucked right under his seat so there's a lot of aero advantages from that."

Dawkins rode out in front for more than four laps, powering the regional team to elite times, before leaving the three other riders to finish the race.

"Pretty funny cause I finished the race two and a half k before they finished the race and I was just riding around just relaxing," said Dawkins.
