Mechanical issues plague Kiwi mountain bike rider on tough Olympic course

Sam Gaze, the last New Zealander to compete at the Rio Olympics, has finished well down the field in the men's cross country mountainbike event.

He finished in 37th place after suffering a puncture and gear problems on the tough course. 

"Sometimes you're the hammer and sometimes you're the nail and unfortunately today I was the nail," an exhausted Gaze told Sky Sport after the race.

Nino Schurter from Switzerland won the race, completing his set of Olympic medals after getting silver in London and bronze in Beijing.

Jaroslav Kulhavy of the Cezch Republic was second with Spain's Carlos Coloma Nicolas third.
