Mangere locals proud of Joseph Parker for going the distance against Anthony Joshua

Mangere's Samoan community's now planning a special welcome back service to celebrate their hometown hero.

Mangere's Samoan community are planning a special thanksgiving service for Joseph Parker when he returns to South Auckland, following his valiant effort in Cardiff.

Supporters filled the Mangere Cosmopolitan Club this morning to cheer on their hometown hero.

It was the latest in a weekend of Parker-related festivities; the Fale o Samoa hosted a special service on Good Friday.

Mangere-Otahuhu Local Board chair Lemauga Lydia Sosene said they were proud of Parker for going the distance.

"Obviously the height and reach [of Joshua] was an advantage, but Joseph never gave up.

"We need to be really proud of where he's gone."
