Lisa Carrington powers through to the finals in K1 500m world championship with commanding lead

August 25, 2018

Seven-time world champion Lisa Carrington has clocked the fastest time for the women's K1 500m final at the canoe sprint world championships in Portugal overnight.

Carrington has barely raced in the individual event this season, but proved she's in top form, powering out of the blocks early to lead for the entire race and take a dominant victory.

The 29 year old's time was 1:49:484, the quickest out of all three semi-final heats and more than a second faster than reigning Olympic champion Hungary's Duanuta Kozak.

Carrington will line up for the K1 500m final Saturday night at 11:03pm.

Another kiwi in action today was para-canoeist Scott Martlew.

The Christchurch Paralympian became New Zealand's first para-canoeist to win a world championship medal for seven years, with silver in the KL2 200m event.
