Laurel Hubbard undergoes successful surgery after Commonwealth Games injury

April 24, 2018

Kiwi weightlifter Laurel Hubbard has had successful surgery on her elbow, following her horrifying injury during the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Hubbard was attempting to break the games record with a lift of 132kg on her third snatch attempt, despite failing to lift 127kg with her second lift.

The Kiwi lifter was forced to withdraw from competition with an elbow injury yesterday.

The weight was too great for her, with Hubbard’s left elbow catching as the bar fell behind her at the top of the lift.

Hubbard later announced that she expected the injury to be career ending, however a spokesperson from Weightlifting New Zealand told 1 NEWS that they are waiting to see whether or not she will continue in the sport.

It is expected to take six to 12 months for Hubbard to rehabilitate the injury.
