Kiwi elite cheerleading squad to compete with the best at world championships

March 25, 2019

The New Zealand team will make their debut on the world stage in Florida next month.

Elite Wellington cheerleading squad, Big Air Cheer, are set to compete with the best in the world at the world championship's next month.

Ten years ago Big Air Cheer's owner and coach William Davenport and his wife saw an ad on Trade Me for a gymnastics and cheerleading business.

"I guess like many Kiwis we decided to take the plunge. It's been a long journey. Definitely been some heartache along the way," said Davenport.

With no previous experience, they had to build the cheerleading squad almost out of nothing.

"We had maybe one and a half teams as opposed to our 11 teams that we have now."

Big Air Cheer's Matt Hunter says next month's world championships is a huge accomplishment for his team.

"This is the pinnacle. I'm going to this amazing competition where I get to see the best of the best compete, and I get to compete against them," said Hunter.

The Big Air Cheer side are the first team outside of the Auckland region to go to the world championships and is the only New Zealand team competing in Florida this year.
