Joseph Parker avoids another ref controversy for his title fight with Anthony Joshua

Joseph Parker has dodged any referee controversies from his last world title fight, with a neutral panel appointed for his world title bout with Anthony Joshua in Cardiff next week.

Italian referee Giuseppe Quartarone was named as the third man in the ring, much to the delight of promoter David Higgins.

Quartarone’s appointment means there'll be no repeat of his attention grabbing protest over the ref for Parker's last fight against Hughie fury.

“I think last time we showed we don’t take that sort of stuff lying down and that everything is in order,” Higgins said.

Canelo Alvarez wins narrow decision for middleweight title against Gennady Golovkin

Canelo Alvarez won the middleweight title by the narrowest of margins this afternoon, taking a majority decision win over Gennady Golovkin to hand the longtime champion his first loss as a pro.

A year after the two fought to a draw, the second fight was almost as close.

There were no knockdowns, but the action was spirited throughout as the two battled to the final bell before a frenzied crowd at the T-Mobile Arena.

Two judges favored Alvarez 115-113, while a third had it 114-114. The AP scored it 114-114.

The two fighters switched roles, with Triple G trying to counter Alvarez and the Mexican fighter coming forward much of the fight.

Both landed well to the head and Golovkin controlled some rounds with his jab though neither were ever in any trouble of going down.

"He's a great fighter but I'm a great fighter and I showed it tonight," Alvarez said.

The fight was a rematch of a draw last September that left neither fighter satisfied.

Auckland Tuatara coach 'really excited' by open trials turnout

As the Auckland Tuatara wrap up their open trials in Auckland today, manager Steve Mintz says that the organisation are thrilled with the turnout.

With the Tuatara coming into existence ahead of the new Australian Baseball League season, the Auckland side have been holding trials, hoping to find an undiscovered talent among New Zealand amateurs.

Speaking to 1 NEWS this morning, Mintz said that the trials have been a success.

"We've been very excited with the turnouts that we've had," he began.

"We've been able to find a handful of people that we think can help us.

"We're super excited about the people with the interest, the willingness to do the trials. For me, that speaks volumes about them - we're excited about everything that's happened the last couple of days."

The Tuatara will assemble as a team for the first time in November, ahead of their inaugural season.
