'It's a pure 50/50 fight' – Boxing world reacts to sudden announcement of Joseph Parker’s latest bout

June 8, 2018

Despite rumours Parker was US-bound, the Kiwi is returning to the UK to challenge Dillian Whyte.

It's an eight-figure showdown that has been pulled together in just 48 hours.

Joseph Parker is set to square off with British boxer Dillian Whyte next month in London's O2 Arena thanks to the work of two promoters with a – unique relationship.

"As I've always said about David Higgins, we know he's a little bit out there," Whyte's promoter Eddie Hearn said.

"But, he's a very, very sharp operator."

But pitching Parker in against the more highly-ranked Whyte is a real risk.

The Brixton-raised bruiser returned from a two-year drug ban to rock current WBA, WBO and IBF champion Anthony Joshua three years ago before being knocked out.

He's also warmed up for the Parker fight by destroying out-of-shape Australian Lucas Browne.

Whyte says he's impressive 24-1 career record boils down to his ability to adjust.

"I'm very good at adapting and adjusting myself to the situation whether they're running or whether they're fighting," he said.

He used that point to take another not-too-subtle jab at Parker’s style of fighting from long range.

"I just hope he leaves his running shoes at home on July 28 and comes to fight."

However, the former WBO champion wasn't biting.

"A lot of fighters avoid each but I think credit to Dillian and myself for putting our hands up to fight each other. We know we're both young hungry."

Hearn says one of the draws of the fight is the fact it could go either way.

"It's a pure 50/50 fight with both guys that have absolutely everything to lose in terms of challenging for the world heavyweight championship."

Boxing fans and critics seemed to agree on social media.

However, Higgins just hopes it's a fair contest.

"I would like to appeal to the British Boxing Board of Control to please not select a referee from the Italian Mafia. Someone more neutral would be nice this time around."
