'It'll raise his market value over here' - UK boxer David Haye says Joseph Parker needs to destroy Hughie Fury

Former heavyweight boxing champion David Haye is backing Kiwi WBO champion Joseph Parker to retain his title in England next weekend – but he needs to do more than just defend it.

The former world champion says while a win would be enough for Parker, a dominant outing will help him take the next step.

Parker has just arrived in the UK and is training at Haye's gym in central London before taking on Hughie Fury in Manchester in two weeks time.

Haye says Parker has shown the world the qualities of a pedigree fighter in the ring.

"He's showed he's got heart, endurance, a chin, the power.  All the boxes you want ticked by a young champion he's been ticking."

But he's wary of Parker's opposition who, like Parker, is unbeaten his professional career, boasting 20 wins and 10 knockouts.

Haye says he's an elusive fighter with an underrated defence.

"I've never seen him in trouble in a fight yet," he said.

"He hasn't fought the opposition Joseph has but there's still a lot of unknowns about Hughie Fury which makes this fight so intriguing."

But Haye warns it's not just Fury that Parker is taking on – the judgement of Europe's critical boxing market will need to see a show from the Kiwi fighter if he wants to continue his quest for other world title fights.

"I think that will really raise his brand, his value over here.

"Then next year, look to have one of these mega showdowns with one of the other champions - whether it's Deontay Wilder’s WBC belt or Anthony Joshua with his IBF or WBA belts."
