'I'm really, really lucky to be here' - teen star Nico Porteous still buzzing about competing at Winter Games

August 11, 2017

The 15-year-old will be the youngest New Zealander competing at the event in a fortnight in Cardrona.

Young New Zealand free skier Nico Porteous is still pinching himself as he prepares to compete at the Winter Games in Cardrona near Queenstown in a fortnight.

The 15-year-old, who has also secured himself qualification in the half pipe event for the 2018 Winter Olympics after landing a triple cork 1440 manoeuvre, was delighted with his rapid rise up the ranks.

The 15-year-old couldn't quite believe the power of the Audi during a promo for the Winter Games near Queenstown.

"Still have to kick myself every once in a while to remind myself that damn I'm really, really lucky to be here," said Porteous.

Veteran Kiwi free skier Jossi Wells will be out of action for the Games as he recovers from a knee injury.

The 27-year-old believes Porteous is destined for big things in the sport.

"It's amazing, it's cool to see Nico grow from such a young age in this sport," said Wells.

"To become the young man he is today is really incredible."
