'He can throw 'em, he can take 'em' - undefeated Kiwi boxer hoping to become next heavyweight sensation

August 31, 2018

Hemi Ahio is wanted by at least two international promoters, being compared to a young Mike Tyson.

Promising heavyweight Hemi Ahio could be the next Kiwi fighter to take the world by storm, with two international promoters battling out for his signature.

Ahio, 28, won his first national title three years ago, before his contractual obligations to a defunct promotion company saw him on the sidelines for two years.

Returning to the ring last year, Ahio claimed another national title, before adding an Oceania crown to his collection.

"That's not Hemi's fault with the promotion and management," trainer Lolo Heimuli told 1 NEWS.

"It's too messy to go there, and I don't really want to go there, the main thing is that we got him back."

Former Australian champion Danny Green among those to add his name those in Ahio's corner.

"He reminds me of a young Mike Tyson - he can throw 'em, he can take 'em," Green said.

Ahio's also linked up with fitness trainer Sunz Singh, the guru behind the likes of Sonny Bill Williams, Quade Cooper and Kiwi UFC fighter Israel Adesanya.

Remembered in fighting circles as the man who got up from a broken jaw inflicted by Mark Hunt, Ahio reportedly finds himself in a tug of war between international promoters, offering lucrative long term deals.

Ahio's team are keeping their cards close to their chest around the timing of his next bout, with September or October mooted as a possible time to return to the ring.

However, with the intention to break onto the world stage, expect big things in the near future from Hemi Ahio.
