Gamers could soon be tasting success at the Olympics

Esports are set to feature as a medal sport at this year’s Southeast Asian Games, with many are saying it’s just a matter of time before gamers taste success at the Olympics.

Harry Blackmore, 23, aka "Honey Badger", competed at this month's FIFA eNations Cup.

"We sung the national anthem and stuff at the beginning of the event and things. It was like an international fixture so it was pretty cool," Mr Blackmore says.

1 NEWS met Mr Blackmore one year ago, when he was starting out his career as a professional Esports player.

Now he is ranked in the top 100 in the world in football simulation game FIFA - and he could soon be representing his country at the Olympic Games.

Esports media company Let's Play Live director Duane Mutu says, "When you start to see these traditional bodies get involved, there's a lot more weight. When you think about FIFA particulary being one of the strongest organisations in the world getting into this Esports landscape, it can only help the movement of the Olympics."

Esports will feature at the Southeast Asian Games later this year.

"It's going to be a medalled sport. That's the first step because it is an IOC-sanctioned event. I think that will be a pathway in which they’re going to look at it more credibly. There's going to be medals on offer ... my belief is that it's going to be very close to being in the next Olympics," Mr Mutu says.

The International Olympic Committee has voiced its opposition against video games which promote violence such as the popular Fortnite, but says it could consider Esports if they don't infringe on Olympic values.

But for a player like Mr Blackmore, it’ll need to happen quickly as the shelf life of a gamer is minimal.

"I'm probably getting a bit too old by then if it's coming around in 2024. Some Esports player retire at 25-26. The reactions have slowed down," Mr Blackmore says.
