Former Black Ferns lock to skipper Volley Ferns in series against Australia

June 5, 2019

Kim Smith says the NZ volleyball women's team has a good mix of youth and experience.

The Volley Ferns kick started their three-match series against an Australian development side in Porirua tonight and hope a convincing series win will lift the team as they prepare later in the year.

Former Black Ferns lock Kim Smith has been named to skipper the women's volleyball team.

"I always had a bit of a 'wonder how I could have gone with volleyball,'" said Smith.

She says her side has a good mix of youth and experience.

"A really exciting young group of girls coming through as well. So just to be still part of the team and have the opportunity to lead those girls as well is pretty exciting."

The New Zealand team is using their series against Australia as a building block as they prepare for July's Asian Championships.
