Former Black Caps star Chris Cairns is reportedly on life support in Australia after suffering a medical incident.

According to a Newshub report, Cairns had an aortic dissection in his heart in Canberra last week.

An aortic dissection is a serious condition in which a tear occurs in the inner layer of the body's main artery, according to the Mayo Clinic.

It’s understood Cairns suffered an aortic dissection at his home in Canberra.

The 51-year-old has reportedly had several operations since, "but has not responded as hoped". Their reporting goes on to state he is on full life support.

Cairns made his debut for the Black Caps in 1989 and played his final game for them in 2006.
