'I don't want to see this on pay-to-air' – Team NZ boss Grant Dalton backs free America's Cup television coverage

December 15, 2017

Grant Dalton spoke in favour of free to air coverage for the 2021 regatta.

Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton has thrown his support behind free-to-air coverage of the 2021 America's Cup regatta.

Speaking on TVNZ1's Breakfast today, Dalton said that he was eager to see free coverage of Team New Zealand's defence of the Auld Mug, saying that Kiwis shouldn't be charged in order to support their team.

"I don't want to see this on pay to air," he said.

"I don't want people to have to pay to come and watch the event in a village atmosphere where you've got to pay to come in."

"That just doesn't make sense to me as a Kiwi."

Yesterday, Auckland Council voted in favour of Wynyard Basin to be developed for the 2021 Cup.

However, the government has indicated a preference for a second option involving greater use of Wynyard Wharf.

This option remains on the table when government and council officials get together to negotiate the final plan for the next America's Cup defence.
