Former Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker is being linked with a switch to the helm of the New York Yacht Club's 2021 America's Cup challenge, according to reports out of the US.

Barker, 44, sailed with SoftBank Team Japan at this year's edition of the Cup in Bermuda, acting as the skipper and CEO for the challenge that saw Team New Zealand reclaim the Auld Mug.

Writing for sailingillustrated.com, Tom Ehman reports that Barker will take the helm of the Quantum Racing's TP52 for NYYC's Super Series in the Mediterranian - which will also serve as a training ground for the 2021 challenge in Auckland, allowing him time to prepare with the American outfit for the next edition of the America's Cup.

The move would see Barker re-unite with NYYC's Terry Hutchinson, after the pair worked together in the 2007 America's Cup in Valencia, where Team New Zealand lost to Swiss outfit Illinghi.
