Dawn Williams honoured after becoming first Kiwi woman to train 1000 winners

December 6, 2018

Horse trainer Dawn Williams will be honoured at significant horse racing meetings in the north island this weekend to celebrate her New Zealand first.

Williams last month became the first Kiwi woman to train 1000 winners.

"Probably didn't think I'd live that long," said Williams.

There will be celebrations for Williams this Saturday with race five at Ellerslie and race six at Trentham, named in honour of her achievement.

For Dawn it means a lot in the current day, with women getting increased opportunities and recognition for their work.

"I remember years ago my first trip to Australia and it was daunting, the men were pretty pushy then so you had to really stand up for yourself."
