Cancer survivors chasing top honours in dragon boating nationals in Ashburton

March 22, 2018

The A Breast of Life team from Christchurch are looking to build on their recent success in the open divisions.

Ahead of tomorrow's Dragon Boating nationals at Lake Hood in Ashburton there is a very special division dedicated to breast cancer survivors.

A Breast of Life team from Christchurch are looking to build on their recent success across a number of women's open divisions as they look to take out top honours at the event.

Co-captain Meri Gibson says the crew of cancer survivors are taking back control.

"What this is about is taking control back because you lose it when you are diagnosed, so this is about control for us," said Gibson.

Often having to compete in the premier women’s division the crew regularly find themselves winning against fit 18-year-old's straight out of high school, even though their boat carries an average age of 56.

"For us that's a real incentive to get out there, if not match them, beat them."
