The Kiwis finished sixth at last month's Hockey World League Semi-Final in Johannesburg, missing out on qualifying automatically with a top-five finish.

Results at the Pan American Cup, the World Cup continental qualifier currently taking place in Pennsylvania, have gone New Zealand's way.

Both teams contesting the final, Argentina and Canada, have already qualified for the World Cup via the Hockey World League route.

That means the place is offered to the next highest finisher in the World League Semi-Final - in this case New Zealand.

The Black Sticks have contested the World Cup 10 times, reaching their highest finishing position of seventh four times, including the most recent edition in 2014.
