Black Ferns Sevens coach says team is yet to reach full potential ahead of Sydney Sevens

January 29, 2019

Allan Bunting believes his side can get better despite a stellar record over the last 12 months.

The Black Ferns Sevens coach believes his team aren't at their full potential yet despite not having lost a game in more than a year.

New Zealand women's coach Allan Bunting said they have learnt from their biggest defeat against arch rivals Australia, going down 31-0 in the Sydney Sevens final last year.

"Well last year we suffered our biggest defeat ever here, so we got a good smack in the bum, so we took some real good learnings from that," said Bunting.

"We still think we are at about 80 per cent of our potential, we still have a lot of growth and that's what we really focus on, how we can keep growing, individually and collectively."

The Black Ferns Sevens took out the women's Fast Four competition in Hamilton over the weekend beating France 31-0.

Ahead of the Sydney Sevens, Waaka says she's a "completely different player" to the 27-year-old.

They back up this weekend in Sydney to try and redeem themselves after last year's disappointing final loss.

Bunting credits his side's composure under pressure and their continuous growth to being undefeated for the last 12 months.

"I guess complacency is the biggest thing that can damage your journey, but we revisit our losses but we have so much growth and we focus on the stuff we are doing well on but we do focus on stuff we can keep getting better," Bunting said.

However, the current world women’s sevens champions focus is winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics.

"We are going to experiment a few things this weekend, Tokyo is going to be a lot warmer, so we are starting to get into it now.

"We want to focus on each game and that is the priority but every little bit of growth we do get is for the Olympics."
