New Zealand U21 netball star Maia Wilson said it was her team's mental edge and determination that helped them get on top of a strong and physical Australian team, to win back-to-back Youth World Cup netball titles in Botswana on Monday.

The New Zealand team arrived at Auckland airport this morning, welcomed by a strong crowd made up of friends and family.

"So amazing, speechless," said Wilson about her team's achievement.

"It's so good to come home and come away with a gold medal against Australia, nothing much you can say about that."

The 19-year-old was named in the Silver Ferns squad last year as an 18-year-old and was a standout at this year's U21 tournament.

The goal shooter praised her team's immense work ethic against their Aussie rivals in the final.

"To come across with a lot of physicality and our girls stood up and they did the job we needed to.

"I think this has been a great platform for me and our whole team to get on that world stage and show what we have got," she said.

"Hopefully you can see what we have been working on throughout this tournament and push it through the seniors in the Silver Ferns and see where that takes us in years to come."

Wilson played for the Northern Stars this year in the ANZ netball premiership.
