Stars dominate woeful Mystics to take out ANZ Premiership's northern derby

The Northern Stars have heaped even more misery on the Northern Mystics, taking this afternoon's ANZ Premiership Auckland derby with a 64-50 win.

Winless from their opening five matches of the 2019 ANZ Premiership season, the Mystics had a chance to try and salvage some pride against their local rivals, who themselves were looking to overtake the second placed Southern Steel.

In a dreadful start from the Mystics, the Stars found themselves in an early lead, shooting out to an 8-0 advantage early in the first quarter, ending the first period of play 19-10 ahead, pushing on to a 35-26 advantage at the break.

Stars shooter Maia Wilson had a somewhat off day inside the circle, landing just 39 from 51 attempts, backed up ably by Ellen Halpenny (12 from 15) and Charlee Hodges (seven from eight).

For the Mystics meanwhile, 17-year old Grace Nweke was the only shining light, with 31 goals from 42 attempts, while Silver Ferns shooter Bailey Mes could only muster 10 from 22.

The Stars' win keeps the Mystics rooted to the bottom of the ANZ Premiership ladder with just one point from five matches.
