Netball NZ boss talks securing Noeline Taurua long-term, the Silver Ferns' legacy and going 'back-to-back in 2023'

Netball New Zealand boss Jennie Wyllie has been caught up in the "whirlwind" of the Silver Ferns' World Cup triumph but now that she's back on Kiwi shores, there's plenty already on her list.

Wyllie told 1 NEWS this morning that the governing body is "bursting with pride" over the win but there's some important business to sort out.

"This is just one moment," Wyllie said.

"We've got to build that legacy now and I think we've still got things we want to achieve and do. I think the best is still to come."

For many fans, that building process rests on getting a solid foundation or, more to the point, getting coach Noeline Taurua, whose contract is now finished, to stay on board.

"Noeline has always been very up front about her intentions," Wyllie said.

"From the outset, we wanted to be able to secure her for this campaign but also the next, but she was also very clear that she had a lot of work to finish with the Lightning and she also wants to do the right thing by us.

"So she's going to come back, finish off her season [in Australia] and then we're going to hear from her and what her plans are."

When asked if Netball NZ were willing to give her what she wants to stay on, Wyllie said it depended on Taurua.

"She's a really important cog in this machine for the Silver Ferns and we know that we can go back-to-back in 2023 and for her it's a chance to create a legacy so she's massively important."

Three major parts of the Silver Ferns' legacy almost certainly won't be around to defend the title with veterans Casey Kopua already announcing her retirement and Laura Langman and Maria Folau believed to be doing the same.

But Wyllie said the trio could hang up the black dress with pride.

"They've put so much of their time, energy and effort into netball, we're so grateful.

"I couldn't be more proud of them."
