The Northern Mystics have finally claimed their first win of the 2019 ANZ Premiership season after mounting a comeback against the Western Bay of Plenty Magic in Auckland last night.
The Mystics were without a win in their first six games this year but an impressive shooting performance off the bench from 17-year-old Grace Nweke saw the home side claim a 54-44 win at Trusts Arena.
The Magic built a 15-10 lead early but Nweke's introduction proved the difference as the Auckland-based side went on to outscore the visitors in the remaining three quarters.
Nweke was assisted by veteran Silver Fern Bailey Mes, who started the game at goal shoot before shifting to goal attack, while defenders Phoenix Karaka and Erena Mikaere raised the pressure at the other end.
The Magic still held the lead at halftime but the Mystics took control of the game after the break, outscoring the Waikato side 32-18 over the final two quarters.
Nweke finished the game shooting 33-from-38 while Mes scored 18 goals on 22 attempts.
The result didn't have any effect on the standings though, with the Mystics still firmly in last place and the Magic fourth.
