The Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic have upstaged the Northern Stars in the ANZ Premiership, claiming a 53-42 victory away in Auckland.

With the Magic sitting fourth on the Premiership ladder, the Waikato-Bay of Plenty side had a chance to close the gap on the third placed Northern Stars, getting off to the perfect start with a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Rookie Kelsey McPhee was the shining light for the Magic, shooting 38 from 45 attempts, backed up ably by Monica Falkner's 15 from 16.

For the Stars, meanwhile, Silver Ferns shooter Maia Wilson put in an uncharacteristic display, with 27 from 36.

The Magic held their advantage at the break, taking a 26-17 lead, pushing the scores out to an imposing 42-27 heading into the final quarter.

Defenders Casey Kopua and Kelly Jury kept the Magic safe at the back, as the Stars never really mounted a realistic challenge on their opponents. The Waikato-Bay of Plenty sealed a comfortable 11-goal win.

The victory sees the Magic remain fourth on the ANZ Premiership ladder, still six points behind the third placed Stars.
