Dame Lois Muir: Silver Ferns' World Cup triumph means 'a great boost for the game'

July 22, 2019

The former coach says that this morning's win will also benefit men's netball.

This morning's Silver Ferns Netball World Cup win will continue to benefit netball in New Zealand for both men and women, Dame Lois Muir says.

Having not won the Netball World Cup since 2003, the Silver Ferns defied expectations in Liverpool, defeating tournament favourites Australia 52-51 to bring the trophy home.

While sports like rugby, basketball and cricket boast high participation rates in New Zealand, this morning's win will no doubt see a rise in netball being played - by both men and women, according to Dame Lois.

Speaking to 1 NEWS this afternoon, Dame Lois spoke about the significance of the Silver Ferns winning the Netball World Cup once again.

"It's just so tremendous," she said.

"It means a great boost for the game in the country, I think [for] young people - both men and women. A lot of men are umpiring, we had a men's game on in the Cadbury Series.

"I think opportunities are there to grow the sport again now. It's had a little bit of a fall off, not much, but we need to get more players out there to get more to pick from."
