Northern Mystics shooter Cathrine Latu has been dumped from the Silver Ferns for this year's World Championships.
The 28-year-old was the major omission from coach Waimarama Taumaunu's squad, which also saw veteran defender Joline Henry and midcourter Liana Leota cut loose.
The Silver Ferns have lost the last nine matches with Australia, and after a poor showing at last year's Commonwealth Games, they were desperate for a change in fortunes for the tournament which is being held across the Tasman.
Among the surprises in the squad was the naming of three-Test defender Phoenix Karaka, who is moving to the Central Pulse from the Southern Steel, and Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic shooter Malia Paseka.
We've had some tough contesting for places over the past few days- Waimarama Taumaunu
Kayla Cullen appears to have got the nod ahead of Henry.
"It was imperative that we selected on form, and it's important to have versatile playing combinations and this group provides that. There is no doubt this has been the toughest selection process in the last four years but that is what you expect in a World Cup year".
The 12-strong squad was named after trials held in Auckland this week.
