Ameliaranne Ekenasio credits 'amazing' Maria Folau for incredible 2019

October 15, 2019

The Ferns' shooters have formed a lethal duo on court.

Silver Ferns shooter Ameliaranne Ekenasio is crediting the impact of teammate Maria Folau for her immense displays so far this year, helping New Zealand to a 1-0 lead over Australia in the Constellation Cup.

Having struggled to cement herself as a Silver Ferns regular in the early days of her international career, Ekenasio's form in 2019 has been irresistible for coach Noeline Taurua, now one of the first names on the team sheet.

Taurua's faith was rewarded at the Netball World Cup earlier this year, Ekenasio continuing her lethal displays inside the shooting circle with 29 goals from 31 attempts in Sunday's series opening win in Christchurch.

Speaking to media today though, Ekenasio was quick to deflect any praise towards teammate Folau, herself another key cog in a Silver Ferns side on the rise.

"We're just feeling really good as a group, which helps me as well," Ekenasio said.

"The combination with Maria helps too. It's always not just one of us, we both can take the load. It kind of feels nice that we can share the role.

"She's been around for so long, and she's pretty amazing out there on court. I'm just loving being able to play with her."

Both Ekenasio and Folau are expected to feature for the Silver Ferns in tomorrow night's second Constellation Cup Test, taking on Australia at Auckland's Spark Arena.
