The Palmerston North native finished 13 at the US Grand Prix in Austin this morning.

Kiwi driver Brendon Hartley was over the moon after making his Formula 1 debut at the US Grand Prix in Austin this morning.

Hartley, 27, impressed in his first outing for Italian side Toro Rosso, finishing 13th after starting in 19th place on the grid.

Speaking to 1 NEWS' US Correspondent Rebecca Wright after the race, the Palmerston North native was beaming at his experience.

"It's been pretty surreal, now it's starting to sink in," he said.

"I know we've had massive support back home, which has been incredible.

The Kiwi driver is hoping for a deal with Toro Rosso after his debut at the US Grand Prix in Austin this morning.

"If I do get another opportunity, which my fingers are obviously crossed, there's so much I can take forward."
