Watch: 'He was useless at school!' Fabian Coulthard's dad certain son was 'destined' for motor racing success

October 9, 2017

Rikki Coulthard admitted his nails got a bit shorter watching his son come third in yesterday’s wet and chaotic Bathurst 1000.

Fabian Coulthard's father says he may not have been a whizz in the classroom but he knows how to fly around a racecourse after yesterday's third place finish at Bathurst.

Rikki Coulthard admitted to 1 NEWS he was biting his nails throughout the race but not because of the difficult conditions.

"I don't get worried about him," Coulthard said.

Holden Supercars driver David Reynolds won the Bathurst 1000 with Ford driver Coulthard finishing third.

"I think he's very capable at what he does."

With the younger Coulthard's podium finish yesterday, he moved to top of the ladder in the Supercars championship with three rounds to go.

"From the age of six he's put everything into his car racing," Coulthard said.

"I think at school he was destined because he was useless at school but that's Fabian - can't knock him on that one [becuase] he's doing the job now!"

Coulthard will look to extend his 91-point lead over Jamie Whincup at the Gold Coast 600 later this month.
