'She was my best mate' – Scott McLaughlin dedicates Supercars crown to grandma

November 26, 2018

The Kiwi driver won his first ever title in Newcastle yesterday.

Kiwi Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin has dedicated his first ever title to his grandmother, saying he promised her that he'd one day claim the trophy.

McLaughlin, 25, held off the season-long challenge of compatriot Shane van Gisbergen, taking the title for the first time last night in Newcastle.

Speaking to 1 NEWS this morning, McLaughlin opened up about the promise he made.

"We were very close, she was my best mate and my biggest supporter, and my nana as well" he began.

"She passed away, and I promised her that I'd win her a championship.

"She was a bit of an attention seeker, I said I'll thank you in my speech. I hope she's pretty happy."
