Liam Lawson not getting ahead of himself after life-changing Red Bull Racing deal

The young Kiwi driver says he knows there's pressure to perform in the junior Formula One programme, but he's ready.

He may have just signed a life-changing deal, but Kiwi driver Liam Lawson isn’t getting caught up in the moment.

The 17-year-old has signed with Red Bull Racing as a junior driver last night, meaning soon he’ll be rubbing shoulders with Formula 1 stars such as Max Verstappen while he works towards earning an F1 seat of his own.

But Lawson knows the journey ahead won’t be easy.

The 17-year-old will be mentored by fellow Kiwi Brendon Hartley.

"Before we signed this contract, we knew there was going to be a lot of pressure," Lawson told TVNZ1’s Breakfast.

"Obviously, this contract is performance-based so if you’re not good enough they will drop you so you have to be on top of it all the time."

Despite the daunting challenge though, Lawson is confident he’s got what it takes.

"It comes with a lot of pressure but I feel ready."
