'I couldn't ask for a better guy to battle with' - Scott McLaughlin relishes Kiwi clash with Shane van Gisbergen

November 26, 2018

The two Kiwis were neck and neck for the Supercars title this season.

V8 Supercars champion, New Zealander Scott McLaughlin has praised title rival and fellow Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen, as the two dueled all season for Australian motorsport's biggest prize.

As the pair traded victories until the final races of the season, only a 25-second penalty on Saturday  appeared to decide the 2018 victor, with McLaughlin taking the honours.

Speaking to 1 NEWS after his celebrations in Newcastle, McLaughlin opened up about the rivalry between the pair.

"It's been a huge battle, and I couldn't ask for a better guy to battle with," McLaughlin said.

"We've had our ups and downs like any other couple in the world, we certainly have a few words or whatever. But in the end, we always race each other hard and fair, and I really enjoy the battles.

"(I'm) so grateful for the opportunity (to have) two Kiwis have a crack at this massive title."
