‘Redemption’ for Scott McLaughlin after sealing maiden Supercars title

November 26, 2018

After losing last year's title in the final race, the Kiwi driver said it made this year's win that much more special.

Kiwi driver Scott McLaughlin is still coming to terms with winning his maiden Supercars title but he knows the one word he can use to summarise what it means to him - "redemption".

After beating out fellow Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen to win the crown in Newcastle yesterday, McLaughlin told 1 NEWS the sensation is still "sinking in".

"I just can't wait to get home and have a couple of beers with the guys."

McLaughlin looked set to win his first Supercars title last year when he entered the final race with a 78-point lead but a 25-second penalty saw him blow his chances and had the crown to Jamie Whincup.

While he says he still hasn't managed to watch a replay of last year's finale, he feels yesterday's win has helped him overcome some of the demons that haunted him.

"It's just a huge amount of redemption," he said.

"I worked hard over the off-season fitness-wise and I came back stronger and then I worked hard on my mental game as well."

When asked by 1 NEWS how he planned to celebrate last night, he wasn't as honest.

"I probably shouldn't say on TV!"
