Young Warriors half not trying to be new Shaun Johnson: 'I can't compare myself to him'

New Warriors five-eighth Adam Keighran is playing down any comparisons with former halfback Shaun Johnson, following his successful debut in his side's 40-6 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday.

Keighran, 21, shone in his Mt Smart debut, scoring one try, assisting another and kicking six goals as the Warriors overpowered the visitors.

Naturally, the young half will be compared to his predecessor Johnson, who left the club for the Cronulla Sharks after a messy contract saga. Speaking to the NZ Herald though, Keighran says he's eager to forge his own legacy with the Warriors, rather than simply follow in Johnson's footsteps.

"Shaun Johnson is a step above…there's a highlights reel you probably would have seen so I can't really compare myself to him at all," Keighran said.

"I can work on my own game, improve from this game.

"I was just happy to get out there and play. But obviously to score and kick a few goals made it that much better so I'm stoked as."

Keighran and the Warriors are next in action against the Wests Tigers, travelling to Sydney for their second game of the 2019 season.
