'I would have loved to have come home' – Kiwis half on failed Warriors move

October 17, 2017

Te Maire Martin was linked with a mid-season switch from the Panthers, before heading to the Cowboys.

Kiwis and North Queensland Cowboys five-eighth Te Maire Martin has spoken about his near-move to the Warriors from the Penrith Panthers midway through last season.

With Tui Lolohea having moved from the Warriors to the Tigers in May, the club viewed Martin as the ideal person to replace the versatile back, before the then Panthers star moved to the North Queensland Cowboys.

Martin shined at the Townsville club in the second half of the 2017 season, filling in for the injured Johnathan Thurston as the Cowboys marched to the grand final - where they were defeated by the Melbourne Storm.

Speaking to media today, Martin spoke about his desire to come back to continue his career in Auckland.

"I would have loved to have come home and play with the Warriors," he said.

"But things happen for a reason, I went up to the Cowboys, and made it to a grand final.

"It was a pretty good second half to the year."
