Warriors 'not going to be rushed' into replacing Shaun Johnson

December 10, 2018

The Warriors now have $1m of their salary cap free with Johnson's departure.

The Warriors aren't putting themselves under any pressure to find a new halfback to replace Shaun Johnson, with the new NRL season drawing ever closer.

With Johnson's departure having left a gaping hole in the Warriors' potential 2019 line up, speculation both at home and across the Tasman has seen the Auckland club linked with a number of moves for high-profile replacements.

Addressing media in Auckland today though, coach Stephen Kearney wouldn't be drawn on saying as to whether or not the club would test the market, hinting that he has options at his disposal for the number seven jersey.

"We're always looking to try and improve our roster," Kearney began.

"We're not going to be rushed into any decisions that present itself over the next month, two months.

"We're going to be making a decision that we feel is going to be best for our footy club long-term."

Kearney was also asked whether or not he feels he has the options within the club, coming from either reserve grade or the Junior Warriors set-up, with both Adam Keighran and Chanel Harris-Tavita also deemed possible replacements for Johnson.

"I think the young guys (have) certainly got an opportunity to be able to do that.

"I'm confident that it's not all placed at their feet, they've got some pretty handy people around them."
